Welp for me, Iron Mike Tyson gave it a good shot. The much ballyhooed exhibition bout between Mike Tyson and YouTube influencer and MMA fighter Jake Paul has the town square aflame with words of criticism and disdain. Folk out here saying Mike looked old and tired. Indeed at 58 Mike is twice Paul’s age. Indeed he lost by unanimous decision. Yet I think when we look at Mike Tyson, he has evolved. A warriors heart, in maturity, evolves to a spirit that has more depth. More analytical. This manifests itself in a methodical more thoughtful approach to warfare.
I believe there was a point where Tyson said in his spirit “what is the real point?’ Think about it, what exactly does he have to prove ? He has been the champion. He has been the greatest. He has been feared. He has been at the top. He has been at the bottom. He has the legacy, the triumphs, the heartaches. He is already a cultural icon. He is still a pop culture icon. Win or lose you can’t take that away from him. He never gave up. Still in shape to go 8rounds with a young lion- not a broken down old man- point proven even when he has nothing to prove- hit him hard more than a few times. Point proven when he has nothing to prove. Got the money and then some. He is still Iron Mike Tyson just older wiser and still strong – maybe stronger because wisdom is more evident.
I’m proud of Mike. The triumph is that he made it through. With his respect and legacy in the craft intact. He is still good. And honestly I feel like he did this for the fun of it. The sport of it. The art of it. Because he can. And so he did. For me this was a good distraction in a strenuous time. Now. Let’s get back to it. #m
